A NEW COMMUNITY MARKER SPACE
Sow the City is pleased to announce they now have planning permission for the Boiler House - their new home in Moss Side. In partnership with with Big Society Capital, One Manchester and GMSEN network hosts GMCVO, they are transforming an old depot in Moss Side over the next twelve years into a new space for growing and making things.
In the 1980s the site operated as a district heating system for thousands of homes in Moss Side and gradually fell out of use. When the Boiler House is fully developed it will include office and activity space for small businesses, hobbyists as well as access to a shared workshop, space for community events, and a leading example of sustainable building design.
Courses and events on site will promote mental health and wellbeing, sustainability, care for the environment, and encourage skills-building and sharing. Already there is the repair cafe, youth sessions, a men's shed, DIY courses and there's lots more coming soon!

REPAIR CAFE
LAST SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH 11-2PM
The Repair Café runs every month at the Boiler House. At the May event, they welcomed more than 30 members of the local community, who brought along a wide array of items for fixing ranging from furniture, strimmers and food processors, to clocks, tables and even a drum machine! We were supported by 8 brilliant expert fixers, many who help out at other Repair Cafés across Manchester.
A Repair Café is a meeting place open to everyone, where people can find the tools, materials and expertise to repair household items for free. The Repair Café is an international movement with over 1600 registered schemes.
Got any broken old stuff sat around gathering dust? Bring it along to their next event and see what you can do. You don’t need to be ‘handy’, just turn up on the day with your broken item. If you have time to help as a volunteer fixer, we would love to hear from you too. The next Moss Side Repair Café is on Saturday 29th June, 11am - 2pm.
